Ad Stagirium a Daemonio Vexatum by John Chrysostom, 15th century
Contents
This part of the manuscript contains the text Ad Stagirium a Daemonio Vexatum by John Chrysostom (c. 349-407), one of the Great Church Fathers. The text is divided in three books, which correspond to three letters sent to his friend Stagirius, who was tormented by the Devil. It was originally written in Greek. This is a Latin translation probably done by Ambrosius Traversarius.
Preface: starts on f.167r with the following words: Sunt quidem plurima in te quem in te laudavi merito.
Book 1: starts on f.167r with the following words: Oportaverat quidem o mi amantissime. It ends on f.175r with the following words: certum argumentum est.
Book 2: starts on f.175r with the following words: Et ista quidem de providentia. It ends on f.182v with the following words: iussum atque imperatum est.
Book 3: starts on f.182v with corrupt text, and ends on f.190r with the following words: vel deijci valebis. Deo gracias Amen.
There is a note on f.190v that starts with the following words: Nota quod septem modis fit facere de. And ends with the following words: talem est indebitus, etc.[?]
ff. 167-190 are written in Gothic script. The vellum is very fine, and the hand good, but many of the pages have suffered from damp and become almost illegible.
This part has two initials of a different type, in dull gold, pink and green, floriated on square, burnished gold grounds.
