MS 143: Libellus de iuridictione ecclesiastica by Pierre Bertrand, 15th century

 Item
Identifier: MS 143

Contents

The text contained in MS 143 is a copy of the work by 14th-century French cardinal and canon lawyer, Pierre Bertrand, titled Libellus de iuridictione ecclesiastica. Bertrand was active in the court of Philip V of France, and served as chancellor to Queen Joan of Burgundy, and also endeavoured on several diplomatic missions for the papacy. This text, of which MS 143 is a copy, is the only text of Cardinal Bertrand to have been published. It is introduced in MS 143, on f. 1r with Incipit libellus petri bertrandi de Juridictione ecclesie tam penetenciali quam temporali et de earum sub ordinacione ad Invicem. The text then follows immediately, with the lines Iste liber est compositus et translatus de italico in latinum per dominum petrum bertrandum utriusque juris professorem...

The text ends on f. 45v with Explicit quid[em] libellus de jurisdictione ecclesiastica factus per petrum bertrandum in consilio conveniantibus prelatorum francie regni ejusdem verbo tenet [?] per ipsum deputatum ex parte ipsorum recitat. Javignolle [Notary's Mark].
