MS 144 contains the texts by early Christian monk and theologian, John Cassian, in the same hand.

ff. 1r-45v: 'De institutis coenobiorum', by Johannus Cassianus [John Cassian]

ff. 45v-103v: incomplete 'Collationes patrum in scetica eremo', by Johannus Cassianus [John Cassian]

The texts are described separately, under MS 144/ff. 1r-45v; MS 144/ff. 45v-103v.

Writing

Written in a clear Gothic hand. There are marginal notes in a modern hand.

Illumination

There are rubrics and plain blue and red capitals and ornamental catchwords.

Custodial History

This is an Italian manuscript from its script and general appearance. There are few marks of ownership. A title and note in Italian on the inner cover may date from the 18th century, Manca un folio in mezzo e alia fine, and Joann. Cassianus M° del 1300.

David Laing's signature appears twice. The title on the back is obliterated, but the number 30 remains.
