MS 87: Liber Divinae Doctrinae by Catherine of Siena, translated into Latin by Raimundus de Vineis de Capua, 15th century
Contents
The manuscript contains the text Libro della divina dottrina by Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), a tertiary of the Dominican Order, scholastic philosopher, theologian, and considered a Saint and a Doctor of the Catholic Church. The text was originally written c. 1370 in Italian, and it is usually known in English as The Dialogue of Divine Providence. It presents us with a dialogue between a soul rising to God and God himself. This version seems to be a copy of a later Latin translation by Raimundus de Vineis de Capua under the title Liber Divinae Doctrinae.
Contents
The text is introduced with the following words: Incipit liber divine doctrine date per personam dei patris intellectui loquentis gloriose et sancte virgini Katherine de senis ordinis sancti dominici de mantellatis conscriptus ipsa dictante licet vulgariter et stante in raptu et audiente actualiter quod in ea loqueretur dominus deus et coram pluribus referente. Primo quomodo per orationem deo unitur et quomodo haec anima de qua hic loqueretur dum esset elevata in contemplacione quatuor peticiones domino faciebat. Cap. primum.
The text starts on f. 1r with the following words: Exurgens quaedam anima versus honorem dei. And ends on f. 298r with the following words: videtur quod animam meam nuper inebries. Deo Gracias. Explicit.
The writing is clear and very black, by more than one scribe, with rubrics and plain red capitals. According to the original foliation 15 folios are wanting at the beginning.
