MS 145: Summa summarum sive Speculum iuris canonici, by William of Pagula, 14th century

MS 145 contains one of only thirteen known extant copies of a 14th-century text by William of Pagula [Paull], a theologian, writer, and English parish priest. This massive text containing five books is a manual on canon law and theology, composed sometime in or around 1318-22. The text in nearly complete in MS 145, although the final book, Liber v wants three chapters.
f. 1r: Prologue, beginning with the words Incipit Prologus. Ad honorem et laudem nominis Jhesu Christi quod quando recolo debeo caput inclinare—hic patent plenius intuenti.
ff. 1v-2v: Capitula
ff. 2v-f. 65r: Liber i, begins with the words Quot modus dicitur fides...
ff. 65r-108v: Liber ii
ff. 109r-165r: Liber iii
ff. 165r-178v: Liber iv
ff. 179r-257v: Liber v
The script is Italian Gothic, fairly written.
Rather crude filigree initials to the five books.

Custodial History
There are no definite indications of provenance, but it is an Italian manuscript. There has been an inscription on the end paper, but of that there now remains only the two words Iste liber. At the end of Book iv the name Williamhas been several times scribbled. No other marks of ownership appear.
