Summa de casibus conscientie by Bartholomew of San Concordio, 15th century

 Item
Identifier: MS 146

Contents

MS 146 is a text by Bartholomew of San Concordio (a small town near Pisa). Bartholomew was a mid 13th-14th century Italian Dominican canonist who produced two notable works, one of which is copied in MS 146. The Summa de Casibus conscientie is an alphabetically arranged work on canon law. It was widely disseminated in the medieval period, as it is particularly practical in comparison to many other existing manuals of medieval canon law, and it presents a guide for confessions. Many of the surviving manuscripts of this text are of Italian origin, so the German origin of MS 146 is notable.

Tabula: a full alphabetical table begins on f. 1r, with 'Abbas', and ends on f. 3r with 'zelus. Explicit thabula.'

fragementary Tabula: following on from the first table, a piece of a second table is contained on f. 3r, only including the letters 'A' and 'B'. This table ends with the colophon Ad finem vite, dic nobis Christe venite. Ex est quod vaccam, quatuor comedere unam.

Prologue: The prologue on f. 3v-4r begins with the words Quoniam ut ayt Gregorius super Ezechielem—-poslulo correctorem...

The text begins on f. 4r, with the words Abbas in suo monasterio conferre potest..., and ends on f. 282r, with tunc est invidia ut dictum est supra. Invidia sunt secundo, Amen dicant omnia.

Colophon: a colophon is included on f. 282r, Explicit summa de casibus conscientie. Consumatum fuit hoc opus in civitate pysana per fratrem Bartholomaeum ordinis praedicatorum doctorem decretorum, anno domini mocccoxxxviii die mensis decembris tempore sanctissimi patris et domini domini Benedicti pape duodecimi, praedictus autem frater Bartholomaeus, compositor hujus libri optimi, obiit anno domini mocccoxlvii die secunda Julii, cujus anima requiescat in sancta pace. Amen dicant omnia.

Custodial History

There are no marks of ownership. The appearance of the book suggests German origin. The date in the colophon refers to the composition of the work itself, not to the date of the manuscript, and therefore the title is misleading. A Sale Catalogue description pasted in the book gives its price in original wood binding as £2, 2s., but seller and purchaser are unknown.
