Bull from Pope John XXII, 'Quorundam exigit' (1317), 14th century
Contents
Ff. 96r-98v, the final folios of MS 151, contain a constitution published in 1317 by Pope John XXII. This bull, 'Quorundam exigit' was Pope John's attempt to resolve the heated debate between factions of the Franciscans, over the matter of poverty. Specifically, John XXII intended this declaration of 1317 to suppress the 'Spirituals', the faction of Franciscans who were vehement proponents of the idea that Christ and his apostles had owned absolutely nothing, and wished to followed strictly the Rule of Saint Francis of Assisi (which was strongly against the possessions of the Church and its members).
The text of Pope John XXII's ruling in MS 151 begins on f. 96r is introduced with the title Incipit declaratio domini Johannis Pape. The bull itself begins with the words Johannes episcopus Servus Servorum dei. Ad perpetuam in memoriam. Quorundam exigit cece scrupulositatis...
The declaration ends on f. 98v, with the words Data Avinione nonas Octobris pontificatus nostri anno secundo. Explicit declaratio domini Johannis xxii super varia fratrum minorum
