MS 102: Collection of letters and sermons by Augustine of Hippo, Bernard of Clairvaux, Jerome, Ambrose, and others, 15th century

Identifier: MS 102

This manuscript contains a collection of 71 letters and sermons by Augustine of Hippo, Bernard of Clairvaux, Jerome, Ambrose, and others. The letters treat different ethical and theological topics. The collection seems to have circulated under the name of Epistolae Agustini (Epistles of Augustine) in the Late Middle Ages. However, the authorship of some of Augustine’s letters has been questioned. In this edition, the three last items do not appear in the contents on ff.1-5. The last sermon was inserted later by a cursive hand, but the other 70 items were written by the same 15th century hand.
Tabula: The title on f. 1r reads: Tabula seu repertorium factum ad inveniendas epistolas inferius seriatim descriptas. Starts on f. 1r and ends on f. 5r.
Text: The title on f. 6r reads: Incipiunt epistole Beati Augustini hyponensis episcopi. Et primo incipit Epistola ad Petrum diaconem de pena damnatorum. The text starts on f. 6r with the following words: Dilecto filio Petro Augustinus hyponensis episcopus salutem. Questionem aut dubitationem. And ends on f. 73r with the following words: qui vivis et regnas per infinita secula seculorum Amen.
Writing The hand is very good Italian minuscule of the period, with plain blue and red capitals, rubrics, and one blue and red filigree initial at the beginning, where also the first four lines are alternate blue and red capitals with purple filigree between.
