The Riddell Memorial Lectures at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne were started in 1928 to commemorate Sir John Walter Buchanan-Riddell (the father of Walter Riddell), who was for a short time Chairman of the University Grants Committee. The lectures were delivered on three successive days and took the theme of the relation between religion and contemporary development of thought. Waddington delivered the series of three lectures titled 'Biology and the Human Purpose' on 28-30 November 1966.
