Correspondence between Louisa and Matthew Crawford , 1817-1857
Scope and Contents
Correspondence between Louisa and her husband Matthew Crawford, including love letters, poems, and locks of hair exchanged during their courtship. The bulk of the letters are from Louisa, who was based in London whilst Matthew worked in the “North,” primarily Newcastle and Edinburgh. They discuss a range of subjects, especially financial issues suffered by the couple, and are consistently loving and affectionate. Louisa often includes stanzas of her poetry for Matthew to edit, suggesting that he had some collaborative input in her work. Most of the letters are undated, therefore the chronology is uncertain and they could have been written at any point in their marriage. The year of the first letter and the year of Louisa’s death are given as the inclusive dates.
