MS 23: Composite manuscript including two texts, 15th century

The manuscript is a 15th-century composite containing works relating to virgin saints. It is German or Dutch. The works contained within it are detailed separately below.

ff.1r-40v: Revelatio Nova Itineris et Passionis Undecim Milium Virginum Martyrum (The Passion of the Eleven Thousand Virgins). This text is related to Saint Ursula.

ff.40v-72v: Vita et Legenda Beate Katherine Virginis (The Life and Legend of Saint Katherine, Virgin).

The texts are described separately, under MS 23/ff. 1r-40v and MS 23/ff. 40v-72v.

Writing

It is fairly written with ornamental initials and partial borders of a rather rough and decadent type.

Illumination

Some of the initials are inhabited, for example with a skull (f.1v), dogs (f.28r), and birds (f.47r). There is a partial border with flowers and a bird on f.42v and a peacock in the border of f.47r.

Custodial History

Evidently a German or Dutch manuscript, but with no marks of definite provenance or ownership. It bears a label with the number 956, also a description of the manuscript in French by a modern hand.

Additionally, alongside the manuscript there is a letter addressed to David Laing that lists the contents of the manuscript.
