De claustro animae by Hugh of Fouilloy, 13th-14th century
Contents
This section contains a verse summary of part of De claustro animae (The Cloister of the Soul) by Hugh of Fouilloy, which was originally written in the 12th century. It is about monastic life.
This section starts with a verse summary of the text on f. 34v. Here, the work is summarised in two poems about the twelve abusiones seculi and twelve abusiones claustri. The verses about the abusiones seculi start with the words Rex ratione carens et inquis estibus arens. Next, the twelve abusiones claustri, beginning prelatus negligens, are listed. The verses related to these, beginning Forma gregis factus, follow.
The Prologue on f. 35r starts with the words Locuturus karissime de hiis que ad edificationem claustri materialis pertinent and ends with nomen tuum.
The Text also starts on f. 35r. It is titled Incipit liber Hugonis de Folieto prioris canonicorum regularium sancti laurentii in pago ambianensi de ordinatione claustri materialis and begins with the words Quoniam de ordinatione claustri materialis. The first section of the text ends on f. 40r with the words et statuta turbant claustri.
The next section of the text, which starts immediately after the last on starting on f. 40r, is titled de Duodecim Abusionibus Claustri and relates to the twelve abusiones claustri listed on f. 34v. After an introduction beginning with the words Duodecim sunt abusiones claustri, each of the twelve abuses is addressed in turn. This section ends on f. 60v with the words pendet summa totius religionis.
This section is written in the same hand as the previous sections. It is late 13th-century Gothic.
