Trattato della mondizia del cuore by Domenico Cavalca, 15th century

 part
Identifier: MS 108/ff. 48v-70v

Scope and Contents

Domenico Cavalca (c. 1270-1342) was a member of the Dominican order, author of several religious treatises and translator of important Latin works. Although its attribution to Cavalca is not certain, this text is the translation into vernacular of the Latin work De modo confitendi et de puritate conscientie, sometimes attributed to San Bonaventura, but written by Matthew of Kraków (d. 1410). It is centred on the importance and the modalities of the sacrament of the confession, and on the nature of sins.

The text is preceded by a short prologue on f. 48v, which begins with the words Per che la purita della conscientia e la mondicia del core e fondamento e porta de tutte le virtu and ends with the words principalmente della sufficiente confessione et del debito modo del confessare.

The main text begins on f. 48v with the words In prima e da notare che la confessione de essere pura and ends on f. 70v with the words septe sono li peccati capitali de quali tutta la universita de vitii procede e nasce, followed by the rubric O Jhesu Christo a te laude sia / Verbo de dio e fiolo de maria.
