Lectures on modern Gaelic literature. By Donald Mackinnon, 1884-1896

 File
Identifier: Coll-98/1/1/41

Scope and Contents

These appears to be scripts for lectures, delivered by Donald Mackinnon in the academic years 1884-85 and 1895-96* at the University of Edinburgh. The papers had been mixed up, and so the page numbers are currently out of sequence. Mackinnon may have reused lectures, or reused paper, so some of the scripts are possibly not part of the same lecture (especially Mackinnon C.12(1)(g) below). 7 scripts have been discerned from the file, which is two more than was noted in previous historical records. More information on each item below:

*These dates were possibly confused by the person who originally organized this file. There is no obvious reason that there should be a gap in ten years between these lectures, other than that they are both on the same subject, and the dates look very similar (they look sequential if you have confused the decade).

(a) No title. Possibly multiple lectures on the subject of Gaelic ltierature. Date noted as 16 March 1884 (only lecture definitely in academic year of 1884-5: therefore possibly separated from its original source and confused with this file?)

(b) Creeds, catechisms, and confessions. Lecture delivered on 28 October 1894.

(c) G[aelic] grammars. Lecture delivered on 9 December 1895.

(d) [Gaelic] secular literature. Lecture delivered on 13 January 1896.

(e) The Gaelic poets of the 17th century. Lecture delivered on 27 January 1896. (However, this is a sizable document, and may have been more than one lecture).

(f) Noted as 'modern Gaelic poets' in previous historical records, though this paper has no title. The date in the top left corner suggests that the lecture was delivered on 17 February 1896, although this is a sizable document that may have been more than one lecture.

(g) Titled 'Early Gaelic literature' with no date, this appears to be a series of lectures. However, there is no clear order to the lectures, and the handwriting / ink varies (clearly the same author, however), suggesting that different, sometimes indiscernible, sections were written on different occasions. Most curiously, the front of the pages have English text, and the rear have Gaelic text that are not translations of the English, but rather, contain different discussion.

Subjects: The subjects listed above (Mac Mhaighistir and Deirdre) are mentioned in some of the lecture notes, but there are likely more subjects throughout the different sections of each lecture.

Language of Materials

Some examples in Scottish Gaelic

Physical Description

The pages are in good condition. The ink is unfaded, and the handwriting is largely clear. However, due to the lack of binding and the lack of clear labelling (such as titles, sections, and dates) means that this file appears to be mixed up and the pages are out of sequence according to their numbering.
