Excerpts from the Liber experimentorum attributed to Roger Bacon, 1478
Contents
The manuscript contains a couple of sections taken from an alchemical compendium attributed to Roger Bacon (1219/20-1292), English philosopher and Franciscan friar. Dorothea Waley Singer identifies these sections as pertaining to the Breve breviarium, also attributed to Roger Bacon, but the scribe refers explicitly to experiments and these excerpts might be taken from another work.
The first section begins on f. 88v and it is introduced by the rubric Incipit opus probatum de quatuor spiritibus in sole et luna. Experimentum fratris roggeri baconis de quo mentione fecit in suo libro. It starts with the words Accipe sulphur mundum minutissime; it ends on f. 89v with the words si me inellexisti et verba servasti
The second section begins on f. 89v and it is introduced by the rubric Item via naturalis et perfecta sive probata in compositione medicine auree ex calcibus corporum atque spirituum et est experimentum fratris roggeri baconis ut in libro suo testatur. It starts with the words Accipe caelum ovi sine nubem; it ends on f. 90v with the words et convertes nisi in via prescripta erraveris.
