Letters by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, late 15th century
Contents
The letters by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius II, have been published in several collections. Piccolomini was a relatively well-known writer in the fifteenth century, and among several other works of history, and autobiography, and a piece of erotic literature, he also collected and published a collection of his own letters. The arrangement of the letters contained here in MS 191 does not appear to follow the arrangment of any of the modern published editions, but the letters in MS 191 have all been published. The text begins imperfectly on f. 1r, with 'Letter II'. Due to significant wear to this folio and the volume more generally, the first line is difficult to read: ...floricia juret non cogitis instare.... The first complete letter in MS 191 is Letter III, beginning on f.1r. Letters IV-XV (in part) are missing, as well as XLVIII-XLIX (in part),LVII-LIX, LXXXIV-C (in part).
The last letter contained in MS 191 of No. CXXXIII. It ends on f. 97v, with the line non magnopere recommendet. Vale de Verona xxi Octobris m.cccc.xxxx.vii
