MS 193: Epitoma historiarum Philippicarum by Justin, late 15th century

 Item
Identifier: MS 193

Contents

MS 193 is a text of the only known work by Roman historian Justin (Marcus Junianus Justinus Frontinus). Little else is known about this author, but he most likely lived in the second or third century AD. Justin's history is an epitome, or abridgement of the earlier history of the kings of Macedonia, Liber Historiarum Philippicarum by first-century Roman historian, Trogus, now lost. Justin summarises passages of Trogus' text, and includes some moralising thoughts of his own to connect these passages. Justin's text became quite popular in the Middle Ages, and survives in at least 200 manuscripts.

Justin's work is divided into a prologue and forty-four books, all of which are contained in MS 193. On f. 1r the text is introduced with the title: Justini Epithoma in Trogum Pompeium Romane peregrinique Historie liber primus incipit. The Prologue begins on the following line: Cum multi ex romanis eciam consularis dignitatis...

The text of Liber i follows the short prologue, also on f. 1r, beginning with: Principio rerum gencium nacionumque...

The work ends on f. 81v with the final line of Liber xliiii (Book 44): in formam provincie redegit. Finis deo gracias.
