MS 196 contains four comedies (all incomplete) by the Roman playwright, Terence. His comedies were first performed in the mid-second century BC. They were very popular in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and survive in hundreds of medieval manuscripts. The four plays contained in MS 196 (Andria, Eunuchus, Heauton Timorumenos and Adelphi) are described separately under these titles.

Custodial History

An Italian manuscript presented to the Edinburgh University Library by J. Wood Brown in 1914, containing a note of the presentation: Almae matri suae J. Wood Brown 1914, and a further note on the history of the volume, MS. found by me at Naples 1880 in the binding of a xv Century book. J. Wood Brown.

The contents of the volume are listed on a page with letterhead from the Mediceo-Laurentian Library, Florence. The writing is modern, perhaps late 19th- or early 20th-century. This description numbers the fragments of text according to an edition of Terence's comedies by D.C Teubner, published in Leipzig, 1884.

General

Foliation and number of lines to a page: ff. 24, double columns and 24 lines to a page.

Significantly damaged folio fragments appear to have been salvaged (see 'Custodial history') and mounted on paper pages in the 20th century. As such, there are no Secundo folio or Collation fields included here.
