Excerpt from the Rosella casuum by Battista Trovamala, early 16th century
Contents
This passage on caritas (charity) is taken from the manual known as Rosella casuum, a handbook of moral theology which contained several examples of the correct application of provisions of canon law. The manual was written by the Franciscan friar Baptista Trovamala (or Baptista de Salis), active in Northern Italy between the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century, and it was conceived especially for the spiritual preparation of priests and to help them to exercise the office of the confession. The Rosella casuum is a revised an expanded version of the first edition of the same work (known as Summa Casuum Conscientiae or Summa Baptistiniana) and was printed for the first time in Pavia in 1489.
It begins on f. 19v with the words De caritate ex summa que Rosella casuum appellatur. Caritas secundum Theo.; it ends on f. 24v with eo quod vitam haberet exosam moraliter peccaret, followed by the underlined words Notandum de caritate et pace / Consulo quisquis eris qui pacis federa queris / Consonus esto lupis cum quibus vivere cupis (probably an addiiton of the scribe). The entry on charity is complete, but the order of the last four paragraphs has been changed.
