Prayers for the Canonical Hours attibuted to Saint Jerome, early 16th century

 part
Identifier: MS 114/ff. 67r-83r

Contents

Prayers for the canonical hours, i.e. the hours that mark the moments of prayer which divide the day of the faithful, regularly observed by the members of the religious orders and often also by laymen. They are accompanied by Psalms and Collects (i.e. short prayers with a specific structure). The prayers are attributed to Saint Jerome and a short prologue in the form of a letter addressed to a monk called Rusticus (a real addressee of some of Saint Jerome's letters) precedes the collection. The same fictitious prologue appears in a manuscript which belonged to the Charterhouse of Saint Sophia in Vught, Brabant (Bruxelles, Bibliothèque Royale, 1557-604).

The prayers are preceded by a rubric at the bottom of f. 67r: Incipit prologus in oratione Jheronimii ad Rusticum monachum.

Prologue: it begins on f. 67v with the words Pervenit ad me caritate tua devocio carissime frater ut aliquam orationem specialiter bonam et utilem tibi indicarem; it ends on f. 71r with ut per septiformem spiritus sancti graciam perveniamus ad resurrectionis octavam.

Prayers: they begins on f. 71r and are preceded the rubric Incipit oratio beati Jheronimi presbiteri. Ad matutinas. They start with the words In nomine Domini Jhesu omne genuflectatur celestium terrestrium et infernorum and end on f. 83r with innocens vita in elemosinis meis benigna.
