Compendium Theologice Veritatis by Hugh Ripelin of Strasburg, previously wrongly attributed to Thomas Aquinas, 1457
Scope and Contents
Text entitled Compendium Theologice Veritatis by Hugh Ripelin of Strasburg, also called Hugo Argentinensis, previously wrongly attributed to Thomas Aquinas, as pointed in a note above the text: 'Compendium Theologice Veritatis - non beati Thome de Aquino sicut aliqui autumant, sed errant quia ipse aliud composuit, sed est Hugonis cardinalis de ordine predicatorum egregii doctoris. Et habet 7 libros et habetur hic in libraria nostra' ('Compendium Theologice Veritatis - not by St Thomas Aquinas like other people think, but they are wrong, because it was composed by someone else, [it is the work of] Hugo Cardinal, [of the Order of Preachers]. And it has seven books, found here in our library'). The text in this manuscript starts with the prologue on f. 181r: Veritatis theoloyce [sic] sublimitas - presens etiam opusculum compilavi. The body of the text opens with Deum esse multis modis ostentitur, and ends on f. 258r with quisque beatus secundum merita recipiet sine fine. Amen. Explicit Compendium theoloyce veritatis beati Thome de Aquino fratris ordinis predicatorum scriptum per me G. b. de s. in 1. anno domini 1457 Apostol. (a later hand - that of the titles - has erased T. de Aquina and inserted Hugonis Cardinalis).
This text was one of the most widely read theological manuals or textbooks of the Middle Ages. It is divided into seven books: 1 The Nature of God; 2 The Creation; 3 On Sin; 4 The Incarnation; 5 On Grace, Beatitudes and the Sacraments; 6 The Sacraments; 7 The Last Things. The original text was probably written in 1268.
