Scope and Contents

This black notebook starts in London, with a growing focus on Lyell's study and reading in preparation for the voyage to the Canaries, including listing companies and people he needs to find whilst on the islands - pg. 25 Messers Gordon Duff & Co and Messers Bruce, Hamilton & Co., and pg. 50 'the Azevedo Portuguese Engineer is intelligent man at Funchal". Pg. 33-35, 47, 61 and 69 list the sources, books and items he is taking with him on the voyage. Whilst still in England, he is at Down with Darwin and Hooker on Coal plants; and he sketches strata at Mildenhall. Pg. 53 he refers to a paper for Miss Martineau's School of Arts, also a reference on pg. 54. There are rare ink spots on pg. 70 and 71. The voyage to the Canaries is documented from pg. 74, which corresponds to the index found in the Madeira Index Notebook reference Coll-203/A5/16. Lyell sails on 9 December 1853, from Southampton, on the steamer The Thames, with Captain Strutt.
