An extract from the catalogue of the "Cities and Town Planning Exhibition", Dublin (Ui Breasail) reads: "Ancient approach to the Town from the South West. Destroyed 1820-1830. Its peculiar form was probably conditioned by cultivation terraces utilised for strategic reasons." (p. 38).
