The Great Fire of Edinburgh, c 1914
Scope and Contents
8 items that were exhibited in the "Great Fire of Edinburgh" section of Geddes' replacement "Cities and Town Planning Exhibition", (1914). The Great Fire of Edinburgh was one of the most destructive fires in the history of Edinburgh, burning for almost 7 days between 15-21 November 1824. The fire damaged an estimated 400 homes, including buildings on the Royal Mile, Conn's Close, Old Assembly Close, Borthwick's Close, Old Fishmarket Close, Parliament Close with the loss of several printworks, the Old Assembly Hall and the office of the Edinburgh Courant newspaper. Many of the illustrations are print reproductions, probably from William Home Lizars "The Great Fire", published in 1824.
