Edinburgh: primitive cultivation terraces, c 1914
Scope and Contents
Cardboard mount with 5 photographs of primitive cultivation terraces, taken from various points in Edinburgh's Old Town. Three photos display monogram of photographer Alexander Inglis. All photographs show cultivation terraces. At the bottom right hand comer of the card is a label which reads Cities Exhibition No. 439, suggesting that it was exhibit no 439 in Geddes' replacement Cities and Town Planning Exhibition. Two pencilled numbers on the back read 112/13. 1. The Castle possibly from the Vennel or Lady Wynd or from the upper part of Candlemaker Row. It shows the back of the Com Exchange. No provenance. (10.9 x 8 cms). 2. Old Mint House, Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh. Includes Inglis Monogram, numbered 497. (20 x 12.9 cms). 3. The Castle from the foot of Candlemaker Row near its junction with the Cowgate. (10.5 x 8 cms). 4. Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket. This includes Inglis Monogram 317. Obviously taken from an attic or roof; note the Black Bull Inn. (20 x 13.4 cms). 5. Edinburgh Castle from the South East. Includes Inglis Monogram 100. This shows Johnston Terrace and the foot of the Castle Steps leading to the Esplanade. (19.7 x 13.5 cms).
