Allan Ramsay, the elder (1686-1758), age 39, c 1914

 Item — Box: Box A
Identifier: Coll-1167/B/23/18

Scope and Contents

Most likely a facsimile of an engraving portrait of Allan Ramsay. The poet aged 39, painted by Aikman in 1723, "Allan Ramsay - William Aikman (pinxit), William Howison (sculpit). Published by Blackie & Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh & London." The picture has a rounded top and has obviously been removed from a book. Geddes employed Henbest Capper and Sydney Mitchell to create the Ramsay Garden complex for use as student and lecturer's residences. It accommodated a large flat for himself and his family. The common room in Ramsay Lodge contains murals by John Duncan c. 1897. In 2020 it is used entirely as residential flats but its appearance has not been altered since Geddes' time.

Processing Information

The printed legacy catalogue the "Papers of Sir Professor Patrick Geddes" (1998), refers to items 3 (ii) and 6 (i) in Folder F. It is not known what 3(ii) refers to, but 6 (i) would appear to refer to a portrait of Alexander Henderson, see Coll-1167/B/9/4.

Caution: note that previous reference numbers A2.139-148 were mistakenly used twice in the legacy printed catalogue (1998). If cross referring to the legacy printed catalogue ensure referring to correct run of A2.139-148.
