Terraces Arthur's Seat, c 1985
Scope and Contents
Terraces on Arthur Seat could refer to other theories about their origins. "...Traces of trenches thrown up (1788) by mutinous Seaforth Highlanders Discontent having arisen in connection with their departure for India, several hundreds of men attacked their officers on the Esplanade, and then held their position here (i.e on Arthur's Seat) for several days until a free pardon was offered them". From Reid's "The New Illustrated Guide to Edinburgh" (1936). Hearsay also suggests, perhaps confusing this report, that the the terraces are the remains of fortifications dug during the Napoleonic War wheen invasion was threatened. It is possible also that they may have used older terraces mentioned by Frank C. Mears.
