Custom House, Sailors Walk, Kirkcaldy, 1853-1908
Scope and Contents
Likely to be a duplicate photographic print of a variation of an earlier George Washington Wilson photograph print. Showing former Custom House (right gable) and town house/fisher tenement block buildings on Sailors Walk, 443-449 High Street, Kirkcaldy, Fife, after it had been renovated by the National Trust for Scotland. Charles II stayed at the house in 1650 on a tour of Scotland following his coronation at Scone Palace. It came close to demolition in 1934 it was taken over by the National Trust for Scotland and restored in the 1950s. Reputedly the oldest building in Kirkcaldy with a house recorded on this site in 1460. Sailors Walk was known as Oliphant's House until the early 20th century. Stamped The Scottish Tourist Board on back. The Scottish Tourist Board was was established under the Development of Tourism Act, 1969.
