Fingal's Cave, Staffa, 1853-1908
Scope and Contents
Photographic print showing silhouette view looking south-west out of Fingal's Cave on Staffa. Iona can be seen on the horizon and two people are seen at the left of the cave entrance. Fingal's cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa and is owned in 2018 by the National Trust for Scotland. It became known as Fingal's Cave after the eponymous hero of the epic Ossian series of poems by James Macpherson (1736-1796) . Renowned for its natural acoustics, Felix Mendelssohn visited in 1829, and the cave was the inspiration for his Hebrides Overture, Op. 26, which popularised the cave as a tourist destination.
