Biographical / Historical
Ewart was appointed the seventh Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh in 1882, following the death of Charles Wyville Thomson. The position was initially offered to Ray Lankester, who did not ultimately take up the post. Ewart remained in post for 45 years until his retirement in 1927.
