Biographical / Historical

Cowan House was opened in George Square in 1929. Financed by shipowner, Thomas Cowan, this residence for male students was to complement nearby Masson Hall Residence for Women Students. The house was demolished in the 1960s as part of the University redevelopment, and a new house with the same name was built in Pollock Halls in 1973.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated in December 2020 by the daughter of Harry James Usher, who was a resident at Cowan House while studying at the College of Agriculture (BSc Agriculture), and who is featuring on the photos. Accession no. SC-Acc-2021-0004.
