Scope and Contents

This is a collection of transcriptions of correspondence carried on between the 2nd Sh'abān, 1229 A.H. (20th July, 1814 C.E.), and the 15th Zulḥijjah, 1230 A.H. (18th November, 1815 C.E.), between the Governor-General and the Nawwāb Vazīr Ghazī al-Dīn Haydar Khān of Oudh. This Nawwāb became Nawwāb Vazīr after the death of his father, Nawwāb Vazīr al-Mumālik Sa'adat 'Alī Khān on the 22nd Rajab, 1229 A.H. (1st August, 1814 C.E.). Five years later, with the full consent of the British, he assumed regal dignity, on the 18th Zulḥijjah, 1234 A.H. (9th October, 1819 C.E.), and died at the age of 58, on the 27th Rabi' I, 1243 A.H. (19th October, 1827 C.E.).

The contents consist of three parts: the first part contains copies of letters received by the Nawwāb Vazīr and the other two parts of communications received by the Governor-General. The subjects of the three parts may be classified roughly thus:

I. Fols. 1-18: - Condolence on the death of the Nawwāb's father; Enquiry after health, etc; The arrival of the Bīgams, Najm al-Nisā', and others at Allahabad; The salary of the troops; The appointment of Mīr Ghulām 'Alī Khān and Dr. Wilson; The discussion and subsequent confirmation of the Nawwāb Vazīr' s rights and authority.

II. Fols. 20-25: - Compliments, etc.; Lists of articles of clothing etc. sent to the Bīgams through the Governor-General; Affairs of Muḥammad Taḥsīn 'Ali Khān; Reception; Purchase of Arab horses.

III. Fols. 26-35: - Lists of eatables sent by the Nawwāb Vazīr to the Governor-General; Copy of the petition presented by Nawwāb Mahdī 'Alī Khān in regard to his affairs.
