Correspondence: Dr Banda, Professor Shepperson and others, 1952-1977
Scope and Contents
Correspondence: Dr Banda, Professor Shepperson and others.
1. Letter: Thomas Price, Glasgow, to George Shepperson, Edinburgh. He thanks George Shepperson for the transcript of Banda's contribution to origins. Considers it will need a good deal of support "before it becomes plausible". It raises various questions about the "Movement" and leaves the feeling that Banda is a bit confused over sequence. 28 February 1952.
2. George Shepperson to the Rev H B. Make, Wilberforce Institute. The writer has found a connection between John L. Dube, Joseph Booth and John Chilembwe. He understands the recipient knows a good deal about John L. Dube and would appreciate answers to some questions. Edinburgh, 3 October 1952.
3. George Shepperson to Dr Hastings K. Banda, London. He hopes to send Dr Banda a copy of the document they discussed the previous summer. At present, he is trying to trace small non-European churches in Nyasaland and would appreciate suggestions to whom he might write. Mr Phiri, Dr Banda's uncle, a founder of the A.M.E. Church, is mentioned, also a Mr Paddy F. Dunga Nsaru, who wrote about the African National Church to the recipient. Edinburgh, 26 March 1953.
4. Letter from Lorna Micklem to George Shepperson, Edinburgh (refers to a letter to The Scotsman, 4a). The origin of the word 'Malawi'. Hitchin, 4 December 1959.
5. Peter Mackay, Malawi Press Ltd, to George Shepperson, Edinburgh. He asks for an article on "The Importance of Nyasaland's History". Sends a photograph (Sa) of Dr Banda holding the book Independent African. Limbe, 27 July 1961.
6. George Shepperson to Peter Mackay, Malawi Press Ltd. Delighted to receive the photograph and agrees to send an article. He asks Mr Mackay if he would send him copies of the old cyclo-styled Malawi News and a copy of the original pamphlet called "Africa - what lies ahead?", published by the Indian Council for Africa. Sends greetings to Dr Banda and Aleke Banda. Edinburgh, 31 July 1961.
7. George Shepperson to Peter Mackay, Malawi Press Ltd. The article is being sent by two separate airmails for safety. Asks for some copies when it is published. He is anxious to obtain a copy of the Malawi Congress Party's Constitution and a copy of the old Nyasaland African Congress's Constitution. Enquires if Mr Mackay could procure them. Edinburgh, 20 September 1961.
8. George Shepperson to Dr H. Kamuzu Banda, Blantyre. Congratulates Dr Banda on his electoral success. Edinburgh, 7 September 1961.
9. H Kamuzu Banda to Professor Shepperson. Letter introducing Lucy Kadzamira, one of their nurses. She is already an SRN and an SCM, and it is now arranged for her to receive administrative experience at Edinburgh before she takes over as matron at Lilongwe. Dr Banda enclosed a cheque for K300 (Three hundred Kwacha) for the African Scholarship Fund. Zamba, 31 July 1976.
10. H Kamuzu Banda to Professor Shepperson. Dr Banda thanks Professor and Mrs Shepperson for their kindness to Lucy. He invites them to visit Malawi for Independence and Republican Celebrations. Zomba, 18 March 1977.
11. Letter from Lucy Kadzamira to Professor and Mrs Shepperson. She is looking forward to the opening of the new hospital. Thanks the Sheppersons for the letter she was entrusted to deliver to Dr Banda. Lilongwe, 10 April 1977.
