Scope and Contents

File entitled "African Studies - Papers relating to [Black People]" (the original term, used until the late 1960s, is no longer appropriate to refer to people of black African origin. Outdated terms are used throughout the file).

1-2. Correspondence (copies): Sir Harry Johnstone, HM Commissioner for British Central Africa, London, and Dr J. Albert Thorne, Edinburgh. Concerns a plan by Dr Thorne to establish a settlement of West Indian Negroes in Central Africa. 12 and 16 November 1896.

3. Correspondence (copies): George Smith, Governor, Nyasaland, to the Rt. Hon. the Secretary of State for the Colonies. In answer to an alleged statement by Dr J. Albert Thorne, a Negro native of Barbados, now living in New York, he declares there is no record of any land having been transferred for the purpose of a settlement to a Dr Thorne. 15 September 1922.

7-14. African Studies Association of the United Kingdom. Letters, Report of the Sub-Committee and Annual Report by the Hon. Secretary Rowland Percy Moss and the Treasurer H. P. White. 21 October 1970 – 1 January 1971.

15. Letter from Professor J. D. Hargreaves, University of Aberdeen, to Professor George Shepperson, Edinburgh. Professor Hargreaves has to introduce 'Black Studies' at the ASUK Council. He encloses a note of the points he wishes to make and asks Professor Shepperson for comment. 16 September 1970.
