Scope and Contents

Autograph letter signed from Hugh Williams to a Miss Horner, possibly Mary Horner Lyell, concerning the proof impression of an engraving, no place, [May 1829]: "Mr. Williams presents his kindest complements to Miss Horner – She was so good as to say that she would do him the favour to accept of a proof impression of the Restoration of Athens from Mr. Cockerell – The print is just come to hand and Mr. Williams has the pleasure of sending it framed according to her kind wish – 11 Colme Street. – Mr. W. is happy to say that he is daily growing stronger and that he hopes to be at liberty soon. Mrs. Williams joins in best wishes and regards." Williams refers to the engraving "Restoration of the City of Athens" by John Hursburgh (1791-1869) after Charles Robert Cockerell (1788-1863). The engraving was published in the 12th part of Williams’s series "Select Views in Greece with Classical Illustrations" as part of the London Literary Gazette on 21 March 1829. The identification of the recipient with Mary Horner Lyell would be consistent with the provenance of the letter from the autograph collection of Baron Leonard Lyell, Horner’s nephew.
