Letters from Buist, George to Charles Lyell, 08 May 1839 - 08 June 8 1857
Scope and Contents
Letters to Sir Charles Lyell from George Buist, including a map. Discusses Buist's own research on geological formation of soil and mud near sea shore and lakes. The earlier letters are about geography in Scotland and latter about India and Egypt. Lyell summarise these letters as:
1) 'Angus raised beaches': letter about Buist’s paper and research on the formation of beach shore
2) 'a Geology of Egypt Mud of the Nile'
3) 'Red Sea Section'
4) 'on laterite': a brief mention of leaving his collection of laterite specimens at the Geological Museum (originally located on Jermyn Street)
5) 'Salt-Red Sea- Culet Kunkur Laterite' - this letter discusses Buist's thoughts on how salt is formed and why some lakes do not ‘dry’; and how the Nile was formed - he argued that water stagnation forms lakes.
