Lyell summarises these letters as:

  1. 'Hunt on medium laterite & regular to Col. C Bunbury Carvajal Plant' and 'Hunt on Calcium matter in lichen'. There is also a continuation to this letter in the same envelope but sent as one letter.
  2. 'Sterry Hunt asking for certificates'. Sterry Hunt is putting himself forward for the Chair of Geology at Columbia College, New York and is asking for a letter with Lyell's support.
  3. 'Sterry Hunt granite veins never intrusive - June 21 1866'
  4. 'Sterry Hunt March 1867 holes on mountain chains - volcanoes etc'. Reference to his papers in Silliman's Journal.
  5. 'Sterry Hunt acknowledging Elements - April '71'. This also includes a separate envelope which is titled "Sterry Hunt March 20 1866 Mountain-chains - volcanoes etc. References to books".
