Scope and Contents
The correspondence between H.D. Roger and Charles Lyell is mainly concerned with American Geology and the projects of their colleagues. Letters are written at Philadelphia; some are written to Mary Lyell. Lyell or his team, have summarised the letters, either on the envelope, or on the letter itself - usually in the space allocated to the address. Where there is a summary, it has been transcribed here.
- 'H.D. Rogers (2) 4. June. 1842, Logan'. In the letter, Roger explains the blunder Logan made when describing an area that he hadn't even been to. Roger says that Logan stole the information from him, 4 June 1846
- 'Mr. H.D. Rogers (3) July 1842 Logan'. Roger continues to talk about how Logan stole his research. He notes that Logan repeated his same mistakes, 12 July 1842
- '(4) Aug 1844 H.D. Rogers; Featherstonehaugh; Position of Psarrolit; On priority of setting state of anthracite'. The letter is concerned with lectures Feathersonhaugh gave on coal in Pennsylvania and contemporaries working on the same subject, mentioning Featherstonhaugh, Amos Eaton, Richard Cowling Taylor, Edwards Hitchcock, George Ticknor. 31 August 1844
- 'H.D. Rogers (8) Nov. 1844 Zeuglodon Cretaceans not Eocene'. The letter is concerned with a geological era of a Zeuglodon in Pennsylvania, coal fossils, and a Mosasaurus in New Jersey
- 'H.D. Rogers (5) Feb. 1845 on publication of map of U.S.'. Rogers is talking about the publication of a geological map of the U. S that he and several others have worked on , including James Hall, over the past 5 years. 2 January 1845
- '(9) H.D. Rogers send[in]g Dale Owen Report Feb, 1853'. This letter is concerned with the recent activities of their colleagues in the United States and Britain, with references to geology of Wisconsin and Iowa, Congress, Asterophyllites, the Geological Society, and New York Crystal Palace Exhibition. 15 February 1853
- 'H.D. Rogers Zeuglodon in N[ew] Jersey Chalk August 1853'. This letter is an update of the geological work H.D. Roger has been undertaking. 20 August 1853
- 'Prof Rogers (1) 22 Aug 1857 Mammalian? Tooth Red sandstone P[ennslyvani]a U.S.'. Additional details: Rogers has learned that he is a candidate for the professorship of Natural History and Geology at the University of Glasgow, he is asking Lyell for a letter of recommendation to send to the Duke of Argyll, 22 August 1857
- 'H.D. Rogers (7) Oldest Reptile footprints near Pottsville Pa [sic Pennsylvania] in equivalent of Mountain S.'. The first section of the letter is addressed to Lady Lyell. He then talks of reptilian footprints and coal plants. The end of the letter give the new address of the Rogers 15 May 1859
