Scope and Contents
1. Autograph letter signed from James Fergusson to Mary Horner Lyell, dated 9 March 1871: “Many thanks for the article you were kind enough to send me giving an account of the diggings at Taxila. They are extremely intending & I must try and follow up the thread they afford. It surprises me however to hear your corresponding talking of the discovery of Taxila – The site of this city was emerged in the cold weather 1863/4 by Genl. Cunningham & his account published in extenso by government [?] in 1864 & the gist of it repacked in a volume ‘On the Geography of Ancient India’ publishes the Genl. in this country, lxxi year. I daresay it is to be had in London [?] if you care to look at it. Taxila is 30 miles NW from Manikayala [...]”.
2. Autograph letter signed from James Fergusson to Mary Horner Lyell, dated 5 May 1883: “The ancient Geography of India” by Alexander Cunningham was published by Trübner & Co in 1871. Includes a short account of the discovery of Taxila, probably quoting the mentioned article on another bifolium. – “I regret very much that I have made all my arrangements for going abroad on the 9th instant, I do not intend returning to England before the 19 or 20 instant. Were it not for this I would have had very great pleasure in accepting your invitation for the 11th [...]”.
