Scope and Contents

1. Autograph letter signed from John Gibson to Anna Susanna Horner (née Lloyd), 25 June [1857], stating his reasons for not being able to follow her invitations: “I have been here for days and been much engaged. Often thinking of you all & intending to wait upon you soon. On Saturday I am sorry to say that I am engaged all the day & ev[enin]g too – I have brought with me from Rome my clever young pupil Miss Hosmer [i. e. the American sculptor Harriet Hosmer, the first female professional sculptor] the daughter of Doctor Hosmer of Boston. She has a statue of Beatrici Cenci in the R. Academy Exhibition – she has been with me 4 years progressing much in her art & is on her way to America to pay a visit to her father & she expects to be in Rome in November to carry on her works [...]”. On stationery with stamped signet of “London Superfine”.

2. Autograph letter signed to Anna Susanna Horner (née Lloyd), dated 16 July [no year]: “I am sorry to say that I have just received notice of a meeting to day at 3 o’clock where H. R. H. Prince Albert will preside & my attendance is required – as this meeting may keep me late I fear that I shall not be able to wait upon you to day which I regret very much [...]”.

3. Autograph letter signed to Anna Susanna Horner (née Lloyd), undated: "I beg to offer you many thanks for the favor of your kind invitation for Wednesday ev[enin]g next. But I am very sorry to say that I shall not be able to avail myself of the neat pleasure which you offer me for, tomorrow mor[nin]g I start for Liverpool where I stay some days – then to Lord Fitzwilliam, then to the Duke of Newcastles – on my return I stay three days in London & then I go to Eartham to Mrs. Huskisson – from there to Rome where I shall work very hard to make up for my illeness [!] [...]". "Mrs. Huskisson" is Emily Huskisson (d. 1856), the wife of the British statesman and financier William Huskisson, who was killed in a railway accident in 1830.

4. Autograph letter signed to Mary Horner Lyell: “Mr & Mrs Tilghman Huskisson have invited me to visit them at Cartham near Chichester – I have proposed to wait upon them next Monday & to stay 2 or 3 days. I am sorry that I cannot visit upon you on Tuesday – with many thanks I remain […]”. With autograph note by the addressee.

Includes: a full-body portrait of Gibson (61 x 92 mm), a picture of the Gibson Monument in the Conway church (64 x 104 mm) and an etched portrait of the sculptor in profile (115 x 162 mm) by J. Brown after a sketch by H. W. Phillips, dated “Rome 1851”, mounted on a cardboard carrier (204 x 259 mm).
