Scope and Contents

Autograph letter signed from Thomas Phillips, sent from [London] on 13 March 1824 to Charles Lyell, concerning a portrait of his fellow botanist William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865): “I have omitted to answer your kind letter in which you mentioned your desire to have Dr Hooker’s cast off picture. It is yours! And as you desire it in order to manifest your respect for him so let me indulge a feeling of the like nature toward one from whom I have received so much politeness and many favours and have the pleasure of presenting it to you. It is at a very light rate that I obtain this gratification for the picture is to me now only as a bare canvass and therefore it is but a poor testimonial in value of my desire to oblige you and the pleasure I have in doing that which may be agreeable to you. Shall I send it down framed by itself or will you let it wait here till your 3rd Grouse is transmitted to Bartley. – We wish you had been at Kinnordy when we visited Scotland for as you say the chance of our again visiting Scotland is very small indeed, tho it afforded us great gratification. I am making my sketches up into a Vol. which I shall have pleasure in sh[ow]ing you and yours when you come to town. Pray send me immediately a sketch of the frame in which the Mrs. Lyell’s picture is. I will if I can exhibit the picture but I have been so broken in upon and interrupted [...] that it is a doubt with me whether I can finish it in time or no. I shall try hard. – I beg to forward my best remembrance to Mrs. Lyell and the young Ladies. – Mr Charles obligedly afforded me a great gratification the other day at the Geological Soc. with the view of the non-descript etc ...”.
