Scope and Contents
Two autograph letters signed from George Scharf to an unnamed daughter of Leonard Horner, [London], 1877.: “The picture has arrived here in perfect condition. It is a very admirable specimen of the artist’s powers, and I feel sure that the Trustees will have great satisfaction in adding it to the collection. Your father’s note at the back will be carefully cherished and quoted in the catalogue now in the course of preparation [...]” (June 26). The said picture is the portrait of Leonard Horner’s brother Francis, created by Henry Raeburn in 1812 and handed over to the National Portrait Gallery by Leonard’s descendants. The second letter, written two days later, is to “acknowledge the receipt of the fine specimen of Francis Horner’s letter writing, with a good signature, which you have bestowed on this Gallery [...]”.
