Scope and Contents

Autograph letter signed from John Whishaw to Francis Horner, London, 21 October 1813: “I left Bowood a few days after you went, & was succeeded by the Abercrombies who got there the latter end of the same week. The party has been since joined by Rogers & Jekyll, & this week they will be re-inforced by the Romillys, Mad. de Steal Mackintosh & perhaps the Marcets. Dumont went there a few days ago. – Since my return I have been several times at Holland House, & lately passed a few days there. Lady Holland is in excellent spirits & considerably better in her general health than she has been for some time, though she appears to confine herself very much & takes little exercise. Whilst I was there I met Mr Fazackerly with whom you must be well acquainted. He seems to be very amiable, modest & intelligent, and talked very agreeably about his travels. I regret that his health is such as to make it advisable that he should pass his winter out of England. – Mackintosh is gone more than a fortnight ago in a curricle to Cheltenham, & is to go from thence to Bowood. What I hear from Sharp & others convinced me that his health is not materially better than when he first arrived from India, and that he has suffered from the dissipation of the summer. He is writing three Critiques – on Burke’s posthumous works Mad. de Stael & Rogers. The last is to be a sort of defence against the Quarterly Review, & of course, will be a sort of panegyric. – You have, of course, seen a very artful & malignant article against Mr Fox in the last number of the Quarterly Review. It is not exactly known who was the author of it, but it is universally attributed to Ward. Unfortunately it is very well done, & much the best article in the Number which, upon the whole, is a very indifferent one. – It is now confidently stated that Abbot will be advanced to the Peerage; & Cha. Sutton will of course succeed to the speakership [...]”.
