Identifier: Coll-1989/74

Scope and Contents

Two autograph letters signed from Roger Wolcott to “dear Mrs. Lyell”, Katharine Murray Lyell.

1. Letter sent from Milton, 20 August 1869: “Mother’s eyes have given her so very much trouble during the past six months that she has been wholly unable to use them in any way, and so the duty, as well as pleasure, of answering many of her letters devolves upon me. She says ‘Send Mrs. Lyell my dear love [...]’” (a long letter written perpendicularly to the main orientation of the text after p. 4 was filled, resulting in a curious but legible grid of script that fills three pages twice over!).

2. Letter sent from 59 Marlboro St., Boston, 5 May 1880:. – “I am sure that you & Miss Rosamond will be glad to hear that we have another little boy – born on Saturdaylast, the first of May. Dear Edith, I am thankful to say, is very comfortable & seems to be doing perfectly well in all respects. How happy we both are I need not attempt to tell you. She charged me to send you an early word of the good news, & to send with it her warm love. The little boy, who will be named Prescott, seems very vigorous & Healthy, & his mama thinks him very handsome & intelligent [...]”.
