An account of the Nsawazi (Ntshima) Estate by Margaret Gardiner, second half of 20th century

 File — Box: CLX-A-24
Identifier: Coll-490/23/RG(C)

Scope and Contents

An account (incomplete) by Margaret Gardiner, Rolf's sister, of the fortunes of the Nsawazi Estate from the time it came into the hands of the Gardiner family, through periods of natural disasters, crop failure, labour shortages, financial stress, political unrest, world wars, federation, and independence.

She recalls her brother's plan to create a model of organic development in Nyasaland and prevent the land suffering from squatter encroachment on a land of impoverished soil and depleted natural resources.

Includes an account of the Chilembwe Rising of 1915.
