Scope and Contents

1. Letter from John W. Moir, Edinburgh. Addressed 'Dear Friend'. He describes a visit to Mwatyusa's village near the north end of Lake Nyasa and theelephant hunt that took place on the following day. This was requested by the Chief because the beasts had been damaging the gardens and tearing down their banana trees. March 1935.

2. Letter from John W. Moir, Edinburgh. Addressed 'Dear Friend'. When John Moir and his brother first went out to Africa in 1877, the slave trade was 'a very real thing'. He condemns it as 'the very essence of greed, cruelty and rapacity'and indicates how the Arab slavers were gradually overcome. June 1935.

3. Letter from John W. Moir, Edinburgh. Addressed 'Dear Friend'. In 1883, he took a cargo of trade goods on a little steamer to Kola Kota, the headquarters of the Jumbe. There they saw a big boat being loaded with 70 or 80 children for a journey into slavery. March 1936.

4. Letter: George Shepperson, Edinburgh, to Miss Maitland Moir, Edinburgh, JohnMoir's daughter. He introduces himself and explains the purpose of his letter. Old letters, diaries, pamphlets, newspaper cuttings and photographs would be of great interest to him. 1 September 1949.

5. Letter: M. L. Maitland Moir, Boat of Garten, to George Shepperson, Edinburgh. Her father's notes are in 5 volumes. These were sent long ago to Principal Raikes of the Witwatersrand University, Johannesburgh. Miss Christine Miller, of the Church of Scotland's Press Bureau, has a parcel of his letters. Miss Moir has a photograph of her father with Cecil Rhodes and (Sir) Harry Johnston. 3 September 1949.

6. George Shepperson expresses his gratitude to Miss Maitland Moir. The family papers will be of great value. 12 September 1949.
