Correspondence relating to collections of the letters of Cecil Rhodes.
1. Rhodes-Rosebery correspondence recently discovered at Barnbougle. Alan Bell has taken the precaution of making Xerox copies and Ian Cunningham has them safely in a parcel for Professor Shepperson. The National Library would like to have the letters, but a decision will have to wait until the whole question of the books and archives remaining at Dalmeny is resolved. He hopes Professor Shepperson would find them interesting and asks him to write ashort letter giving his opinion of their special value to a student of Cecil Rhodes's life and works. 2. Professor Shepperson to A. S. Bell, Librarian, Rhodes House Library, Oxford. Acknowledges Mr Bell's letter and informs him that he has received the Rhodes' letters. He will send him a note of their value in due course. Edinburgh, 9 October 1981.
3. Alan Bell, Librarian, Rhodes House Library, Oxford, to Professor Shepperson. He enclosed a copy of the list of Lagden papers that the Professor had requested for a student in Johannesburgh. Oxford, 13 October 1981.

5. Alan Bell to Professor Shepperson. The Rhodes House Library has obtained a copy of 'T. W. Baxter's massive typescript compilation 'Yrs, C. J. Rhodes, the Letters of an Imperialist'. Professor Sheppersonwill be welcome to see it in the Library. Alan Bell asks 'if he may borrow back the Rhodes-Rosebery correspondence. He is uncertain how much of it was copied for the Library. At present, Mr Bell is seeking sponsorship for further copying of appropriate private papers held in southern Africa repositories, and funding from the Rhodes and other Trusts for an archivist to deal with Dame Margery [Margery Perham]'s vast request. 6. Professor Shepperson to Alan S. Bell. He is attending to the various matters mentioned in Mr Bell's letters and in time he will send his thoughts on a Rhodes Documentation Project comparable to the Livingstone Scheme. Edinburgh, 28 June 1982.
7. Alan Bell thanks Professor Shepperson for the fully referenced script of his Grahamstown lecture and sends news of other additions to the library. An archivist has been appointed for four years to deal with the Perham Collection. Oxford, 30 July 1982.
8. Alan Bell to Professor Shepperson. He is pleased to receive a second copy of Scotland and Africa. Oxford, 6 August 1982.
