Scope and Contents

Five copy letters, including draft responses, to Lubbock, and one copy of Lubbock's letter to Lyell. Summarised as 'Nile deposits - Age of Egyptian buildings - & Lubbock's letter & Extract from 2nd letter March 3rd. Both relate to Horner's work on the Statue of Rameses. Copy letter of 25 May 1865 is Lyell's response to Lubbock's accusation of using his research [see also Coll-203/1/172] and defending his actions. Copy letter of 30 May 1865 documents the transition of Lyell's notes into publication, using this timeline to robustly defend Lyell's work as not influenced by Lubbock's papers. Another copy letter undated but envelope suggests June 1865, is written by Buckley with many alterations and pasted in sections, with Lyell referencing other authors who deserve recognition for work input into Antiquity of Man. Finally there is one copy letter of J. Lubbock's letter to Lyell, 29 May 1865, making complaint against Lyell using his work in Antiquity of Man.
