Scope and Contents

From the Series:

See also the other series of papers on Lyell's lectures, which formed part of the original tranche gifted to the University in 1927. The items listed here were part of the Acceptence in Lieu (AIL) acquistion of 2020, however, it also contains material that came to the University with the 1927 gift, but, was dissassociated from that original material, coming in to the Library at a different time, and physically alongside the run of Lyell's Offprints. That material was assigned a reference, whilst still in the hands of the Geology Department Library of GEN 1999/7, but it was not identified or included in the review of the catalogue in 2002 as part of the GASHE project. Using handwritten lists located in boxes, and a timeframe of lectures compiled from published sources, these lectures are now arranged to reflect the institutions Lyell lectured at, in chronological order. It can be seen from the items, that Lyell often picked up themes of lectures and reused material; where this has been observed, this information has been used to place the items in order. In several instances, an original order has been restored - combining items from the 1927 and the AIL tranches. The order now reflects Lyell's location, with more detail below that on the content of the lectures.
