Unidentified manuscripts - lectures and books, 1831 - 1842

Scope and Contents

Found within the series of lectures, these documents are a mix of drafts of lectures, som epossibly unused, and manuscripts of Lyell's 'Principles' and 'Elements' highlighting how his work during this period bridged teaching and writing.

  1. Prose notes, pp. 20-23, unplaced. Enclosing note: Sidlaw Hills, Fault.
  2. Annotated page-proofs of ‘Principles of Geology’, (either 1st or 2nd edition) vol. 3, & 2 pages MSS (probably for an R.I. lecture). 3 different paginations, with annotations. Enclosing paper: Early (1st edition) principles, due to the size of the paper and font size.
  3. Prose notes, pp2-4. ‘Conclusion of Elements’.
  4. 1 page of prose notes, entitled ‘Conclusion’. Reference to ‘p283’. (most if not all are probably unused drafts for ‘Elements of Geology’, not texts of lectures.)
  5. 2 pages of prose notes, ‘Concluding Remarks’, (most if not all are probably unused drafts for ‘Elements of Geology’, not texts of lectures.)
  6. 2 unplaced pages of short notes. Pp. 5 and unnumbered page.
  7. 4 pages, short notes, probably drafts for ‘Principles of Geology’ or ‘Elements of Geology’, not lectures.
  8. 2 unplaced pages of prose notes, ‘...history of the earth’
  9. Printed proofs of lecture to Royal Institution on successive forests of erect fossil trees in the coal strata of North America and Europe (6 copies) Mr W Pole, Esq., VP in the Chair. (n.d.) Post 1842. Old reference Gen 1999/8/7
  10. Royal Institution April 30, W R Hamilton, Esq. in the chair – Press cutting taken from The Athenaeum – On the Age of the volcanoes of Auvergne as determined by the remains of the successive groups of land quadrupeds. Post-1846. (7 copies) (1 copy is a printed rapport) Handwriting on back of the proof. Also with packet: Royal Institution lectures Volcanoes of Auvergne, old reference Gen 1999/9/8. Handwritten notes, listing illustrations and prose lectures notes, alongside a cut down version.
  11. Mixture of different miscellaneous sheets. Entitled by hand: Lectures 28 Lavas of Cones of Auvergne. pp. 7, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 25.
  12. Unidentified 3 pages of prose notes, pp1-3. Unpublished manuscript.
